Becoming a photographer

Photography is more than buying a camera and simply taking a photo. As a newbie you know what you want to do, and that’s take amazing photos. But you have no idea where to begin? You don’t need to the best equipment, Just you and the will to learn this craft. Unfortunately there is no cut shortcut just a lot to learn.



Step One: Research and Buy


What inspired you to become a photographer? What style of photography speaks to you the most? Decide what you would like your art to say. Don’t be afraid to fully immerse yourself it’s a photography. Subscribe to photography magazines and YouTube channel’s and maybe even find out who’s your favorite photographer is.


When it comes to cameras try not to be quick in purchase one. They are more than 100 cameras to choose from. Find out which camera will fit you best. Some like film and many like DSLR. It’s all up to you. When searching for a camera try to be strategic not generic. Avoid that question everyone seems to ask a photographer, “What is the best camera?”. Try questions like,


  • “What is the first camera you practiced on?”

  • “What camera/setting do you prefer to use in a studio versus a natural light location?”

  • “Why do you like this camera?”

  • “What camera did you have challenges with and why?”

Once you narrowed down to a few, try visiting a Photography Store. Test cameras out, see the difference in quality and how much control you have of the camera. If you are still unsure, try a camera rental and practice with it. Find a camera that will compliment you and make this a better experience for you.



Step Two: Understand Your Camera


In order to understand photography, you have to build a relationship with your camera. First thing you should do after purchasing a new camera , is read the manual. That is the fastest and easiest way to learn what your camera can do. NEVER throw away the manual. It’s the Bible for your camera. Find out what each button and notch does to the camera. Play around with different setting, see what your camera can offer you.


Step Three: Explore and Challenge Yourself


After you found your camera, and understand it a little bit more, the next step is to explore and practice with your camera. Go around the house, outside, or anywhere close to you and keep taking photos. Play around with the settings. The more photos you take, each one will improve. Not every photo will be amazing, but you will be surprised at what you come up with.


Once you have explored the camera and have a better understanding of what it can do for you, challenge yourself. Pick one place and take 1000 different photos. Don’t be afraid of the amount, if you are comfortable with your camera and snapping, it will be done in no time!


Almost anyone can take a photo, but everyone isn’t a photographer.
